Peruvian Recipe: Causa Norteña

The Causa Norteña or cause of ferreña fana is a typical Peruvian meal prepared with yellow mashed potato, yellow chili pepper and fried fish. One of its main features is that it is prepared with green chili pepper (can be ground or whole) to taste a better taste. And today it is prepared with a variety of supplies ranging from prawns to seafood; although it is usual to choose what is most appropriate to us. Its taste is delicious!

Ingredients for the Causa Norteña.

  • 3/4 kg (750 g) fried fish.
  •  1 kg yellow potato, peeled and mashed.
  •  1 fresh lemon, squeezed.
  •  1/2 kg cup vegetable oil.
  •  50 g fresh ground garlic.
  •  Salt.
  •  Pepper.
  •  3 medium onions.
  •  1 green chili pepper, chopped into long strips.
  •  1/2 cup white vinegar
  •  4 medium olives.
  •  2 boiled eggs.
  •  1 lettuce in leaves.

Procedure of the cause.

  1. Peel the sancochada yellow potato and with the help of a “press potatoes” start making a puree.
  2. In the same preparation period add tablespoons of yellow chili pepper, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. For better maceration knead with your hands until you transform the mashed potatoes into one. Add vegetable oil for a better result.
  4. Separate the mashed potatoes and on a medium pot proceed to prepare a basic dressing with chili panca, ground garlic, yellow chili pepper and oil.
  5. Leave to brown for 20 seconds and pour the chopped onion into thick Juliana and the green chili pepper, cut into strips. Pour in a little white vinegar to temper the taste and smell.
  6. Brown our onion for as long as necessary and simmer. Finish when everything is cooked.
  7. Over a frying pan, start with the fish frying and separate. And on a plate start shaping the mashed potatoes and accommodate the fish (cut into medium pieces).
  8. Add the prepared onion and next to it: an olive, a lettuce leaf and an egg cut into strips (as pictured).
  9. Serve and taste as a family. Do not forget that we can accompany it with a natural fruit juice.
  10. The type of fish to choose is optional. But when it comes to a restaurant you choose special fish like: the bonito or the monkey. Or as it is said in Peru “fine fish”.
